The Garfield PGH

The Garfield PGH is a space created by Black artists, for Black artists. It was established in response to the lack of safe and welcoming housing options available to Black artists visiting Pittsburgh. In alignment with its founding mission and commitment to cultural preservation, overnight residency at The Garfield PGH is reserved for individuals who identify as Black, African American, Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, Caribbean, African or as part of the African Diaspora.

Conceived by artist Jessica Gaynelle Moss in 2021, The Garfield PGH is now a long-term solution to the short-term housing needs of Black visiting artists. Located in the celebrated Hill District community of Sugar Top, The Garfield PGH:Lodging for Black Artists and The Range: Artist's Studios -- named after the artist’s paternal grandparent’s Joseph Garfield Moss Sr. and Rebecca Range Moss – 2,160sqft multi-family home built in 1912 has been transformed into Pittsburgh’s first upscale creative oasis and living experience for Black artists.

Building on the cultural legacy that already exists in The Hill District, The Garfield PGH will help make Sugar Top home to artists of different mediums, disciplines and backgrounds from all over the world.

Officially open as of June 2025, local art organizations and individuals are now able to rent the space to accommodate their unique artist's housing needs. The Garfield PGH is a space for us, by us.

The Garfield PGH is generously funded by individual donors, The Pittsburgh Foundation, Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh, and Opportunity Fund.
